The Ceremonies

Are tickets necessary for Commencement or Convocations?

Tickets are not required for Commencement or Convocations. There is no limit on the number of guests per degree candidate.

In the event of a severe weather event, graduates will be assigned an alternate Commencement time and location. Changes to event logistics will be distributed to the contact information provided during Commencement registration.

What is the difference between a Convocation and Commencement?

Syracuse University schools and colleges host celebratory Convocations on the Thursday, Friday or Saturday before Commencement to individually recognize degree candidates and to present special awards. Convocations are followed by receptions, where students and families have the opportunity to mingle with deans and faculty.

Commencement is the all-university ceremony on Sunday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and ending approximately at noon. The severe weather plan may call for a start time as early as 8:30 a.m. or as late as 2:00 p.m.  Please plan your day accordingly. The Syracuse University Chancellor and President ceremoniously confer degrees at the Commencement ceremony.

What are the qualifications for participation in Commencement?

Bachelor’s and master’s degree candidates who plan to complete their coursework between December 2019 and by August 2020 are invited to participate in the May 2020 Commencement ceremonies. Under extenuating circumstances, candidates who do not meet this requirement may petition their home college(s) for permission to participate.

Doctoral candidates must have completed their degree by April 2020 to participate in Commencement.

It is the student’s responsibility to know and fulfill all degree requirements for graduation. Participation in Convocation and Commencement ceremonies does not indicate that degree requirements have been completed.

In addition to filing a diploma request, all graduates must complete the Commencement Registration process. As part of the registration process, you will create a participant profile. You will be asked to RSVP to various events, including your home college Convocation and to the Commencement ceremony. You will be asked to indicate the number of guests who plan to attend those events and you may update your profile in the event that that information changes. You will also be asked to provide a contact email and cell phone number for Commencement Weekend in the event of any schedule or logistical changes.

Commencement Registration is now open. Register now!

Registration must be completed by April 15, 2020.

Where can Syracuse students complete the “File Diploma Request” process?

Syracuse Doctoral, graduate and undergraduates students may file the Diploma Request online at MySlice.

When are diplomas given out?

Diplomas are mailed to all degree recipients after the certification and awarding process is complete. Diplomas are sent to the permanent address unless a different address was specified when filing the Diploma Request on MySlice.

When and where do degree candidates obtain caps and gowns?

All degree candidates participating in Convocations and Commencement are required to wear a cap, gown, and tassel.

Syracuse University Bookstore coordinates cap and gown distribution.

Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral candidates must pre-order regalia through the bookstore website.

All caps, gowns, hoods (master’s and doctoral degree candidates only) and tassels will be distributed at the University Bookstore, Schine Student Center, on Monday, May 4, through Friday, May 8, 8:30 a.m.- 6 p.m. and Saturday, May 9, 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

To order your cap, gown, hood, or tassel, visit the bookstore website.
